John-Curran-obit-webWAKEFIELD — John Owen Curran passed away on Jan. 14 at his home in Wakefield surrounded by family. He was 94 years of age.

John was born in Dorchester on March 31, 1921 to the late William and Ethel (Owen) Curran. He was raised in East Boston and Winthrop and graduated from Winthrop High School. Mr. Curran joined the U.S. Army and served his country with pride during World War II. He also was a Merchant Marine Veteran and served in the South Pacific after his tour of duty with the Army. After his discharge, Mr. Curran worked as a commercial printer for William Curran Printing in Boston from the 1940s to 1979. He then worked for the U.S. Navy, Supship in Boston as a civilian engineer in South Boston for many years.

John had been a resident of Wakefield since 1957. He enjoyed reading, gardening and fishing, loved the ocean and spending winters in West Palm Beach, Fla. The Curran family would like to thank all the caregivers that assisted John over the past year.

Mr. Curran was the loving husband of the late Mildred R. (Tusini) Pye Curran and the late Elinor (Flynn) Curran. He was the beloved father of John O. Curran Jr. of Stoneham; and Patricia E. Barton and her husband Colin of England. He was the stepfather of Joyce Kashgegian of Malden; Louise Bryan Dugas and her husband Norman of Strafford, N.H., and Wilson H. Pye Jr. and his partner Maureen White of Reading. He was the grandfather of Michael Pollino of Whitman; Stephen Pollino of Florida and Tracey Long and her husband Jason of Woburn. He was the great-grandfather of Conor Owen Long. He was the brother of Norman F. Curran and his wife Caroline of Florida. He is also survived by many step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation was held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St., Melrose, on Monday, Jan. 18, followed by a funeral service.
