MELROSE — John R. Mitchell, of Melrose, died peacefully on Tuesday, May 5, after a lengthy illness.
John was born on May 13, 1955 in Boston to William and Evelyn (White) Mitchell. He was raised in Stoneham along with his seven siblings. He attended Stoneham schools and graduated from Stoneham High School in 1973. Years later, John decided to continue his education at the New England Culinary Institute in Vermont. After graduating, John pursued a career as a chef, working at many different places over the years.
John was a very laid back person who was easy to get along with and made friends everywhere he went. He had a very calming presence and stayed cool under pressure. John was an avid sports fan and loved watching the Patriots and the Bruins. He even continued to play hockey into much of his adult life, participating in men’s leagues at Hockeytown in Saugus. In addition to hockey, John loved listening to music (Led Zeppelin in particular) and eating good food. Always a critic of food, he would always have to add his advice when someone else was cooking. John’s favorite place to be was in Siesta Key, Florida. Whether it was taking long walks on the beach with his companion Pam, or working on his tan, John was happiest there. He also loved spending time with Pam’s grandchildren who all adored him. John will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
John is survived by his loving companion Pam Merrill. He was the beloved brother of Mary Boyle and her husband Thomas of New Hampshire; Kathleen Foster of Wrentham; Susan Mitchell of Danvers; Evelyn Mitchell of New Hampshire and Mark Mitchell of Medford. John was also the loving brother of the late Marilyn Goucher and the late William Mitchell III. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 13 from 5-8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose.
