MELROSE — On Tuesday, a concerned citizen reported a scam involving Publisher’s Clearinghouse.

The man called the Weekly News saying he was contacted by someone claiming to be from the company, and that the man had won $2.5 million.

All he had to do was go to the local Walgreens, obtain a “vanilla” card, put $500 on it and send the money to the caller, who would then release the Publisher’s Clearinghouse prize.

Police continue to look for the driver of a black SUV that allegedly struck shopping carts as a Shaw’s employee pushed a long line of them across Essex Street Tuesday, May 22.

The employee was not hurt and there was no apparent damage to the shopping carriages, police reported.

A witness told police a man driving a black SUV struck the carriages. He stopped his vehicle, got out to check for damage and then took off around 2:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, May 22, around 5:40 p.m. a 24-year-old Marshfield man was arrested for texting while driving a motor vehicle near the intersection of Grove and Main street.

Richard Silva DeOliveira, 21 Fox Run, apartment 5, was stopped around 5:45 p.m. Police also learned he did not have a license and had a warrant out for his arrest.

A 45-year-old Saugus man will be summonsed to court for various infractions following an incident at the corner of Bay State Road and Damon Avenue around 12:10 p.m. Thursday, May 24.

The man failed to stop at a stop sign. Police said he was also charged with the unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

On Friday, May 25, an officer interviewed a man who was reportedly drinking underneath the bleachers at Fred Green Memorial Field.

Police said they were alerted by middle school staff of the man’s presence around 1 p.m.

When they arrived, police also said they saw an empty bottle of rum next him. After speaking for awhile, the Everett man picked up his lunch cooler and left the area.

Also on May 25, at about 7:40 p.m., a loud argument was quieted by a police response at Wes Wyoming Avenue and Berwick Street.

A 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was reported stolen from a Spear Street residence around 1:15 p.m. Sunday, May 27.

The black and dark gray truck was parked in the driveway around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 26. It had ladder racks and a tool box in the bed, filled with tools.

MONDAY, MAY 21

Someone found a Kate Spade black purse on Grove Street and turned it into the station around 10:40 a.m.

A woman in distress at the Fuller House on Cottage Street was taken to an area hospital around 10:55 a.m.

Neighbors were reportedly trespassing on her property and and the property of others in the Maple Street neighborhood around 11:30 a.m.

Someone having an allergic reaction in the 400 block of Main Street was taken to an area hospital around 11:45 a.m.

A DPW crew found a license plate and turned it into police just before noon.

A so-called IRS scam was reported just before 1 p.m.

A dog was bitten by another at the dog park at the Knoll sometime before 1:50 p.m.

Mercedes car keys were found in an undisclosed Melrose park and turned into police at 2:35 p.m.

Peace was restored following a disturbance outside a doctor’s office on Myrtle Street around 3:10 p.m.

A complaint about something that occurred at the dog park at Pine Banks was lodged at 4:30 p.m.

An iPhone found on the sidewalk in front of Bruegger’s Bagels on Main Street some days before was turned into police around 6:40 p.m.

The DPW was told of a water problem at the Knoll just before 6:55 p.m.

Vandalism to a motor vehicle was reported on Ardsmoor Road around 8:05 p.m.

A woman in distress on Youle Street was taken to an area hospital around 10 a.m.

TUESDAY, MAY 22

A man and woman found sleeping inside the Bank of America’s ATM kiosk at the corner of Main and West Emerson streets around 5:15 a.m. were sent on their way by police.

An East Street resident in distress was taken to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital around 6:35 a.m.

A 91-year-old woman fell on Stevens Place around 10:15 a.m. and was taken to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital by those on the Fire Department’s rescue truck (the ambulance).

A woman in distress on Whitwell Street around 11 a.m. was eventually taken to see a doctor.

A motor vehicle parked “for hours without moving” at the car wash on Tremont Street drew a police response around 12:30 p.m. The operator went on his way.

A woman in distress at the deli counter at Shaw’s was taken to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital around 1:15 p.m.

 

A package was reportedly stolen from an Albion Street apartment building sometime before 2:35 p.m.

Someone reported being struck by a Whole Foods truck in the supermarket parking lot around 3:20 p.m.

A landscaper reported an odor of natural gas on Lynde Avenue around 5:40 p.m.

A woman in distress on Boston Rock Road was taken to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital around 6:40 p.m.

A West Emerson Street resident reported a lost passport just before 7 p.m.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 23

A shopping cart full of refuse was on Lynde Street for about three days when it was reported to police just before 7 a.m.

At 7:56 a.m. a woman in distress on West Emerson Street was taken to Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.

A hit and run accident was reported on Chipman Avenue around 10:30 a.m.

Asphalt trucks were impeding traffic on Lincoln Street around 12:15 p.m.

Police went to Gooch Park on Maple Street around 4:20 p.m. after being told an older man playing on the slide with kids seemed “out of it.” The man left prior to police arriving, and a search of the area was not successful.

At 5:40 p.m. police went to the Dunkin’ Donuts on Main Street after being told of youths rolling cigarettes there. When police arrived, the only person in the area was over 18.

Someone on Irving Street reported losing an Overseas Citizenship Card in the mail around 6:30 p.m.

A deceased duckling was spotted underneath a vehicle off Franklin Street around 7:45 p.m.

Police quelled a family argument on East Foster Street around 10:25 p.m.

THURSDAY, MAY 24

A disabled motor vehicle on Upham Street was towed by AAA around 12:20 a.m.

A leaf blowing complaint was lodged around 5 a.m. at the intersection of Main and Grove streets. It was a DPW crew getting ready for the annual Memorial Day weekend parade.

Police handled a situation on Prospect Street around 2:20 p.m. where a cab driver said a fare refused to pay. Everyone was satisfied after talking things out, police said.

A man was asking motorists for money around 4:05 p.m. near the McCarthy House on Main Street.

Stolen credit cards and paper work were reported at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital around 7 p.m.

A resident of the 300 block of Main Street reported around 9:35 p.m. that he had ingested hydrogen chloride. He refused to be taken to the hospital.

A car alarm was sounding around 10:15 p.m. in the back lot of La Qchara Cafe on Franklin Street.

FRIDAY, MAY 25

An intoxicated man was reported at Melrose Shell on Main Street around 2:30 a.m.

Two dogs were loose on East Foster Street at the Leonard Road intersection around 11:15 a.m.

Police dealt with a fence dispute on Ryder Avenue around 1:30 p.m.

A hit and run motor vehicle accident was reported at Upham Street and Geneva Road around 3:30 p.m.

An Island Hill Avenue resident told police they lost computers in Boston around 5:05 p.m.

Identity fraud was reported around 5:10 p.m. by a Porter Street resident.

Police resolved an issue with noisy youths in the woods on Lebanon Street at Forest Street around 10:30 p.m.

SATURDAY, MAY 26

A loud group of youths was reported at Upham Street and Woodcrest Drive around 1:30 p.m.

A suspicious red pickup truck being operated slowly and without headlights on Nordic Way around 2:50 a.m. was not located by police.

Loud equipment was being operated on Swains Pond Avenue around 8:45 a.m. The contractor was unaware of the ordinance dealing with weekend start times.

A motor vehicle accident was reported on Boardman Avenue at Damon Avenue around 9:45 a.m.

 A deceased cat was placed in refrigerated storage after being found on West Wyoming Avenue around 10:35 a.m.

A raccoon was reported under an East Wyoming Avenue porch around 11:35 a.m.

At about 5:10 p.m. a Linwood Avenue resident said a raccoon was lying in dirt in his backyard. He was advised to call a pest control company.

An unfamiliar motor vehicle parked in a Linwood Avenue driveway around 5:45 p.m. turned out to belong to a guest attending a neighborhood child’s first birthday party.

Just before midnight, police were told that six to eight youths threw rocks at the home of a Faxon Street man and at the car of one of his neighbor. Police could not find the youths.

SUNDAY, MAY 27

A past burglary was investigated at 2000 Stone Place Residences around 10:30 a.m.

Youths were reportedly out of control at the Dunkin’ Donuts on Main Street around 7 p.m. They left the area after police spoke to them.

MONDAY, MAY 28

Someone speaking loudly on a cell phone around 2:10 a.m. in the area of the Ripley School on Lebanon Street said he was heading home for the night.
