MacIntosh, Adrian sweep their weight classes

METHUEN—The Melrose High wrestling team competed among the best at the Methuen Invitational on Saturday, Jan 26. It was the perfect prelude to post season competition and a fight this week for the Middlesex Freedom title. 

Melrose (91.5) placed tenth overall among a tough contingent of teams, including Springfield Central, who won with 248.5 points. The Red Raiders crowned two first place winners in Hunter Adrian (113) and Stephen MacIntosh (145).

Among those wrestling for Melrose were Adrian, MacIntosh, Dan Freed, Jackson Curran, Jacob Swan, Jake Petitpas, Sam Salickram and Victor Rodriguez, It was an overall solid day for Melrose, who placed four wrestlers in the semifinal round, which included both Adrian and MacIntosh as well as Dan Freed and Jackson Curran. Curran (220) and Freed (135) both  took home bronze in their weight classes. Freed prevailed over opponents from Springfield Central and Tollgate before falling to a Winchester rival in semifinals. Curran beat his Methuen and Nashua opponents before falling to an Algonquin wrestler.

Melrose’s All-State champ Hunter Adrian continued his unbeaten streak with a final round win over Ty Stewart of Dracut, 15-0. MacIntosh went the distance over Devin Lambert of Dracut in a 4-2 decision. 

There is a lot coming up for the Red Raiders, who will host the Div. 3 North Sectionals next Saturday, Feb. 9 at Melrose High. But until then, they are battling for a league title, which was determined Wednesday (post deadline) at the second annual Brawl in the Hall 2, where Melrose squared off against Wakefield at Memorial Hall to decide the Freedom League Champion.
