MELROSE—Three Melrose hockey players became national champs at the National U-16 Tier 2 tournament in Burlington, Vermont last weekend.

Jill Mercer, Saoirse Connolly and Rachel DiFraia, members of the East Coast Wizards hockey team, skated to victory over the weekend by shutting out teams from Michigan, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Hampshire, and Vermont. It was a gripping finale when the Wizards topped Alaska in the finals, 2-1, to to clinch a national title.

The East Coast Wizards finished 6-0 and only allowed 1 goal throughout the entire tournament. Connolly, DiFraia and Mercer are all sophomores at Melrose High School and members of Lady Raider hockey team.
