MELROSE — The Melrose Red Raider football team were not the only Cinderella story in Div. 3 this season. On Saturday the Dartmouth High School football team shocked many by beating undefeated Walpole (10-1) in the Div. 3 State Semifinal at Marciano Stadium. Melrose and Dartmouth will now face each other in the Div. 3 State Championship at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA on Dec. 6 at 6 p.m.
Dartmouth scored two touchdowns in the last five minutes of the game to beat presumable favorite Walpole including one thrown after a recovered onside kick. The result is the most unexpected Super Bowl division match up in many years.
Who is Dartmouth? At 9-2 the Indians entered the Div. 3 Southeast tournament at 5-2 and as second seed but beat Nauset and Dighton Rehoboth to reach the finals. They became the Div. 3 Southeast champs after beating Somerset Berkley 14-0. They bring to the field quarterback Blaine Almedia, running back Chris Martin and Jack McCabe, who scored the winning touchdown on Saturday.
On Tuesday Dec. 2, the MIAA will host a Championship breakfast for all teams participating in the Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium. At the breakfast Melrose will host media while also flipping a coin for home advantage.
