Outduel Reading in a 3-1 victory

BEVERLY — The Wakefield Merchants won their second game in a row and exacted a little revenge at the same time on Thursday night at Endicott College as they topped the Reading Bulldogs by a 3-1 score in an Intercity League contest.

The Merchants were scheduled to have played the Watertown Reds in a doubleheader yesterday at Walsh Field. However both contests were rained out.

Wakefield sits at 3-4-1 on the season while Reading fell to 6-4 in the ICL standings.

The Merchants, who were pummeled by the Bulldogs by a 12-3 score in the first meeting at Walsh Field, played a much better game on Thursday night against Reading.

Kyle McCarthy (1-1) went the distance for Wakefield giving up one run on six hits. McCarthy struck out three and walked one.

Ryan Hayward (0-1) was the starting pitcher for the Bulldogs and went five and a third innings giving up three runs on three hits. Hayward struck out three and walked two.

Nick Quatro hurled the final inning and two thirds giving up a hit while striking out one and walking one.

The Merchants and Bulldogs each tallied a run in the third inning. Wakefield plated two runs in the sixth to break the 1-1 tie and made the score hold up for the victory.

The Merchants were outhit but made the most of the five they got. Bobby Losanno, Scott Searles, James Ramsey, Josh Band and Louis Tarantino had the five hits.

Losanno, Searles and Tarantino scored the three runs. Band had two RBIs and Darren Bisso drove in one run.

Losanno also stole a base, while BJ Neil, Ramsey and Tarantino each reached base on a walks as well.

Cam Farnham had two hits to lead the Bulldogs offensively. Harry Oringer, Zac Talis, Corbin Hyde and Cody Hall each had one hit.

Hall scored the lone Reading run, while Oringer had the lone RBI. Talis also drew the one walk surrendered by McCarthy.

All of Sunday’s ICL games were postponed.

The 3 p.m. doubleheader at Walsh Field in Wakefield between the Watertown Reds and the Merchants, the 5 p.m. Melrose Americans-Arlington Trojans game at Summer Street Field, and the 7 p.m. game at Endicott College between the Somerville Thunder and Reading Bulldogs were washed out due to yesterday’s rain.

One of the Merchants-Reds games will be played on Sunday, July 5 at 4 p.m. at Walsh Field. The other game has yet to be rescheduled.

Wakefield plays tonight in a makeup of an earlier rain out as it takes on the Melrose Americans at 7:30 p.m. at Morelli Field.
