MELROSE—For the second time in her career, Melrose High’s Ruby Hansen made the Middlesex League Freedom division girls hockey All-Star team this winter.

The sophomore net-minder played net in every game for Melrose this season. The young team struggled this year going 3-13-1 overall but enjoyed late momentum at the tail end of the season.

Hansen, who also made the ML Freedom All-Star team two years ago as an eighth-grader, had a goals-against average of 4.34.

“She kept us in games that we had no business being in,” admitted Melrose head coach Frank Sorrenti. “Her technical aspects have really improved this year and she is also very quick.”

What has also helped is her relationship with Melrose goalie coach Steve Lucey. “They work very well together and he has helped her,” pointed out Sorrenti.

Melrose was led in points this year by eighth-grader Kate Rynak, as she had 18 with eight goals and ten assists. Second in points is sophomore Julia McNeeley who had ten goals and 16 assists. Last year, McNeeley was a ML Freedom All-Star along with senior Lucy Clark.

The Daniels sisters, Ella and Grace, were both tied for third in points with 15 as each girl had seven goals and eight assists. Ella is a sophomore while Grace is an eighth-grader.

Melrose was one of the youngest teams in the league this year with only two seniors (Clark and Sam Lyons) and two juniors (forwards Charlotte Demers and Ella Bonacorsi).
