Sophomore has played in all 33 games for Hockey East regular-season champs
BOSTON — As the Boston University men’s hockey team prepares for quarterfinal play in Hockey East the weekend of March 13-15, there is one player from Wakefield who has
contributed to the Terriers’ success this winter.
That player is sophomore forward Nick Roberto.
Roberto, who stands at 5-10, 176 and shoots from the right side, has played in 33 games for the Terriers this season and has four goal and six assists for 10 points this season for BU. One of his goals was a game-winning score.
Roberto also had an assist in the Terriers 4-3 overtime victory over Harvard in the semifinals of the Beanpot which was held a the TD Garden. Boston University went on and captured the Beanpot title with 4-3 overtime victory over Northeastern.
Boston University currently has a 21-7-5 overall record and 14-5-3 record in the conference. This is the ninth time the Terriers have claimed the Hockey East regular-season title. After winning five straight from 1994-1998, they also won the crown in 2000, 2006 and 2009.
To begin his sophomore year in 2014, Roberto recorded a goal and an assist in an exhibition game against St. Thomas on Oct. 4. He scored a goal in a 5-2 victory at Connecticut on Nov. 22. He also scored a goal in a 5-1 win at RPI on Dec. 13.
In his freshman year for the Terriers, Roberto played in 33 games and finished second among freshmen in scoring with 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists).
He scored his first collegiate goal in a 3-2 victory over Holy Cross on Oct. 12, 2013 and recorded his first career assist in a 4-3 victory over Providence on Nov. 1, 2013.
Roberto scored a power play goal against No. 8 Boston College and registered the game-winning goal in a 4-1 win over UConn. He also scored a goal in a 3-3 tie with North Dakota on Nov. 23 and scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win over Cornell at Madison Square Garden.
He also recorded two assists at Harvard and picked up a goal and an assist at Frozen Fenway on Jan. 11, 2014. In addition, he scored a goal and added two helpers in a victory over Vermont.
Before he attended Boston University, Roberto was named 2012-13 USHR Prep Forward of the Year. He spent two seasons at Kimball Union Academy after attending Malden Catholic, where he helped the Lancers claim the 2011 Super 8 title.
He recorded 23 goals and 48 points in 28 games for the Wildcats in ‘12-’13. Roberto also was named the most valuable player of the 2012 Flood/Marr Holiday Tournament, becoming the first KUA player to win the award since 1975.
The Wakefield resident also helped Kimball Union win the NEPSIHA Small School title at 2012 Piatelli/Simmons Tournament by scoring the overtime winner in the championship game. He put up 29 points (14 goal and 15 assists) in his first season at KUA.
Roberto is enrolled in the College of General Studies and is the son of Dayna and Mark Roberto. His father, Mark, is an assistant coach with the Wakefield Memorial High boys’ hockey team.
