NORTH READING — Cape Ann League power Newburyport upended the Hornets 57-42 on Jan. 6 at NRHS in a game that was much closer than final scoreline. Junior Andrew Boulas was North Reading’s high scorer with 14 points.

The Clippers were excellent defensively and made NRHS work on every possession. They held NR to 28 percent shooting and held a 46-33 rebound advantage.

The Hornets still managed to stay within striking distance in the first half. Senior captain Cody Cannalonga hit a late 3-pointer and the deficit was just 30-25 at halftime.

A nice feed from Cannalonga to fellow senior captain John Jennings to open the third quarter cut the lead to three, but ‘Port went on a 6-0 run to push the lead to nine.

Once again, NRHS chipped away and got within two at the start of the fourth.

Unfortunately, the Hornets went ice cold and were outscored 14-3 to close the contest.

North Reading (3-3) beat Hamilton-Wenham 61-54 on the road Tuesday after press time. A full recap will appear next week. The Hornets host Lynnfield (1-6) on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
