NORTH READING — The North Reading High boys’ lacrosse team lost at home to Newburyport, 14-5, on Tuesday morning on a cloudy, damp day. With that result, the Hornets record fell to 0-6 overall and 0-5 in the Cape Ann League.
The Clippers improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the CAL.
The Hornets were right with the Clippers in the opening half as they only trailed 5-4. However, the guests took control of the game early in the second half.
“They made a few adjustments at halftime and we started to press,” said Hornets head coach Chuck Campobasso. “They also have a good face-off specialist so they were able to regain possession after scoring.”
Teddy Suny led the Hornet offense with two goals and one assist. Sam Morelli, P.J. Conte and Blake McMeniman all found the back of the Clipper net once.
Hornet goalie, Dave Tran, made 14 saves, which is a season high.
“Dave kept us in the game in the first half,” pointed out Campobasso.
On April 13, the Hornets lost at home to Manchester-Essex 13-7, on a unseasonably hot, sunny day. North Reading trailed, 8-4, at the half.
“Their speed and athleticism got to us,” admitted Campobasso. “The heat got to us more in the second half than it got to them but the guys did play tough.”
Suny led the offense again with four points as he had three goals and one assist. Morelli and Logan Lamont each scored twice. Tanner DuPriest added a pair of assists.
Tran turned back seven shots.
On Apr. 20, the Hornets welcome Greater Lowell at 10 a.m. in a non-league game.
They return to CAL action on April 24 as they end their five-game homestand with Amesbury. That contest will start at 4:30 p.m.
