NORWOOD — The North Reading High School Chorus, directed by Mrs. Allison Kane, earned a High Silver Medal at the recent MICCA (Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association) competition at Norwood High School.

MICCA is dedicated to the study of the performance of instrumental and choral music in public schools in Massachusetts.

The singers performed in front of a panel of three judges who are music teachers at various institutions throughout the country and then received a clinic from one of them. “The clinician, Dr. Neviton Barros from Colby College, was outstanding and gave the students a lot of great information to take back to their next rehearsal and in preparation for upcoming performances,” Kane said.

The chorus performed three distinct styles of music at the competition. “Ubi Caritas,” by Michael John Trotta, was an a cappella piece sung in Latin; “Time,” by Jennifer Lucy Cook, was an a cappella piece with difficult rhythms, intonation and harmonies; and “Measure Me, Sky!” by Jonathan Reid, featured long lines and soaring notes.
