Enjoyed cooking for her large family

MELROSE — Ruth E. (O’Donnell) Smith, 89, of Melrose, died at home on Nov. 28.

Ruth was born in Boston, raised in Malden and was a graduate of Girls Catholic High School in Malden. She was a homemaker and resided in Melrose since 1954.

Ruth was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was a great cook who enjoyed cooking for her large family. She loved the beach and enjoyed going to Bermuda and Cape Cod.

Ruth was the beloved wife of Edward M. Smith for 66 years. She was the loving mother of Eileen R. Mulgrew and her husband Paul of Malden, Jeannie M. Smith of Beverly, Edward J. Smith and his wife Marie of Melrose and Joseph J. Smith and his wife Lisa of West Peabody. She was the caring sister of the late John E. O’Donnell and his wife Helen of Florida. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 West Foster St., Melrose on Monday, Dec. 1, from 10 to 11 a.m, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary Church, Herbert Street, Melrose at 11:30 a.m.
