U.S. Navy veteran of WWII

GLOUCESTER — Edward Charles “Ted” Livingston, 95, died peacefully on Saturday, November 3, 2018, at the Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Gloucester. Born in Gloucester on March 1, 1923, Ted was the son of the late Charles and Etta P. (Brown) Livingston. He graduated Gloucester High School in 1941 and proudly served during WWII in the U.S. Navy as an aviation machinist with an honorable discharge in December 1945. He was a painter and worked for Feldman Construction for many years, and also had his own business at one time. He worked until he was 87.
As a young boy he was interested in boats, especially those powered by the wind. As a teenager, he captained sailboats from Bickford’s on Rocky Neck, sailing his clients to their destinations and back. He was recognized for his “excellent yachtsmanship and service.” Ted built his first DN iceboat in his downstairs workshop, painting her fire engine red. He was a member of the International DN Ice Yacht Racing Association for many years and traveled near and far for the best iceboating conditions; he enjoyed racing competitions. He later built two more ice boats.
Ted took up windsurfing at 69 and soon flew to Aruba to try out his new hobby. Kayaking was another outdoor activity he enjoyed. He was once a member of the Gloucester Masonic Temple and the American Legion. Ted was an avid reader, enjoyed working with his hands and wood, growing vegetables in the backyard garden, and loved animals, too. His children remember the metal toboggan he built for them which they took to Burns hill – that toboggan flew!
His blue eyes, smile, quick sense of humor with thoughtful and caring ways will be missed.
Ted was predeceased by his wife Ruth E. (Hill) Livingston and two sons, Bruce E. Livingston and Charles Livingston. He is survived by a son and a daughter, Ronald Livingston and his wife Marcia, Susan Livingston and her companion Joseph Carver; daughter-in-law Charleen Livingston-Flint and her husband Birlyn. Grandchildren are Gordon, Heather, Shannon and Kyle Livingston, Kate Schuck and her husband Anderson and step-grand daughter Jennifer Arvilla.
Per Ted’s wishes, arrangements are private. There will be a celebration of Ted’s life in the future which will be posted in the newspaper. Arrangements are by the Greely Funeral Home, 212 Washington St., Gloucester. Online condolences may be given at: www.greelyfuneralhome.com.
