WAKEFIELD — Four students from the Galvin Middle School were named winners in the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) annual poster and essay writing contest, it was announced at the school board meeting on Tuesday, May 26. This year’s topic was STEM careers in the water and wastewater fields.
Zachary Gori won first place in the writing contest for grades 3 through 5.
Also named winners were Caroline Ford, honorable mention in the grades 3 through 5 poster contest and Samantha Sheedy, third place winner in the writing contest for grades 3 through 5. In addition, Olivia Found earned honorable mention for grades 3 through 5 in the writing contest.
An awards ceremony to honor the students and their teachers was held Friday, May 22 at the Deer Island Treatment Plant in Winthrop.
At the reception all winning entries, including posters, essays and videos were on display.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Stephen K. Zrike reminded the school board and community that the second annual technology fair would be held Thursday, June 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the high school. The event will be overseen by Jeff Weiner, technology director for Wakefield schools.
Technology equipment manufactured by Apple, Microsoft, Acer (Chromebooks) and Dell will be featured along with learning sessions sponsored by Wakefield Memorial High School Connect.
The purpose of the event is to introduce families in Wakefield to the various vendors so they would be able to make educated technology purchasing decisions for the Bring Your Own Device program and for personal use at home.
Weiner said that this year he also is excited to have learning opportunities for the community presented by high school teachers and students who will provide an overview on Google apps for education and social media.
High school students also will answer questions concerning their Bring Your Own Device experiences.
