Extremely proud of his Irish heritage

MELROSE — William E. “Bill” Berrigan passed away on September 25, 2022, at Tufts Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was 84 years old. Born in Boston, Bill was the youngest son of Michael Berrigan and Mary Berrigan (Twomey). Husband of 52 years to Ruthie Berrigan (Marinelli) and loving father of Christine Brady and her husband Sean of Melrose, Paul Berrigan and his wife Erin of Wenham and Michael Berrigan of Melrose. Cherished “Bampi” to his five grandchildren, Kendall, Keira, Griffin, Liam and Ruby. Caring brother of the late Michael Berrigan and his late wife Ginger and the late John Berrigan and his wife Barbara of Greenfield.  Brother-in-law of Rose Marie Lauro and her late husband Bob of Billerica and John Marinelli and his late wife Fran of Florida. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Bill grew up in Jamaica Plain, graduating from St. Mary’s High School in 1955. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Boston College in 1959 and served in the U.S. Army before a long career as an insurance broker. Residents of Melrose for nearly 50 years, Bill and his late wife Ruthie were near and dear to their neighbors and friends in the Highview Avenue area. Bill was extremely proud of his Irish heritage and took many trips to visit family members in Ireland. He and Ruthie also enjoyed annual trips to Bermuda as well spending time with their five grandchildren at their lake house in Milton, N.H. Bill will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Visiting hours was held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Thursday, September 29, 2022, from 4 – 7 p.m. Procession from the Gately Funeral Home was on Friday, September 30, 2022, at 8:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian burial at the Church of the Incarnation, 425 Upham St., Melrose at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to attend. Interment in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Stoneham. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Boston Children’s Hospital, 401 Park Dr., Suite 602, Boston, MA 02215.
