LYNNFIELD — The girls’ soccer team concluded last week with two wins and a tie.
Lynnfield (9-2-2) began last week defeating Manchester-Essex 5-1 on Oct. 8.
Freshman forward Ava Damiani gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead four minutes into the first half after receiving a pass from junior midfielder Bella Sykes.
Damiani scored her second goal with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, assisted by sophomore midfielder/forward Kaylee Barrett.
Manchester-Essex scored with two minutes remaining in the first half.
Undaunted, senior captain/midfielder Emma Rose drilled a shot a minute before halftime. Senior defender Lilly Rocco had the assist.
Senior captain Bella Carroll gave the Pioneers a 4-1 lead after receiving a pass from Rose with nine minutes remaining in the second half.
Carroll scored Lynnfield’s final goal with two minutes remaining in the game. Damiani and sophomore midfielder Sofia Giardina had the assists.
Sophomore goalie Victoria Minor tallied three saves in net.
Pioneers head coach Mark Vermont said Carroll and Damiani both played great games against Manchester-Essex.
“Bella and Ava are very dynamic up top,” said Vermont.
Vermont said the Pioneers played very well against the Hornets.
“We did a nice job defensively by limiting Manchester-Essex’s opportunities,” said Vermont. “Senior captain Ariana Guarracino and sophomore Jordan Calichman both played great games in the back. Our midfield is very strong and just dominated.”
Crushes Essex Tech
The Pioneers cruised past Essex Tech 5-1 on Oct. 10.
Rose gave Lynnfield a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the first half. Damiani and senior captain/midfielder Clara Caulfield had the assists.
Sophomore midfielder Giada Antidormi found the back of the net with 19 minutes remaining in the first half after receiving a pass from Damiani.
Damiani nailed a shot with 13 minutes remaining in the opening frame, assisted by Barrett and Carroll.
Lynnfield took a 3-0 lead at the break.
Rose scored her second goal of the contest off of a corner kick 12 minutes into the second half.
“Emma played a great game,” said Vermont. “She has good composure on the ball.”
Carroll found the back of the net with 22 minutes remaining in the second half, assisted by Caulfield.
Essex Tech scored its only goal with less than a minute remaining in the game.
Freshman Sabrina Hayman tallied two saves in the cage during her first varsity game. She started in replace of Minor, who is currently out with an injury.
“Sabrina played well,” said Vermont. “It was great that Sabrina was able to get her feet wet with the varsity team.”
Vermont also said senior midfielder/defender Ella Hayman, who is Sabrina’s older sister, played well against Essex Tech.
“Ella played a great game,” said Vermont. “She played both midfield and defense. She is a versatile player.”
Vermont said the Pioneers played a complete game against the Hawks.
“We did a nice job moving the ball,” said Vermont. “We are working hard to put teams away.”
Ties Danvers
The Pioneers tied Danvers 4-4 on Oct. 12.
Carroll gave Lynnfield an early 1-0 lead after receiving a pass from Sykes 12 minutes into the first half.
Barrett found the back of the net 15 minutes into the opening frame, assisted by Caulfield.
Undaunted, Barrett scored her second goal with nine minutes remaining in the first half. Carroll had the assist.
Barrett finished with her first career hat trick after finding the back of the net with three minutes remaining before halftime, assisted by Rose.
“It was awesome that Kaylee was able to get the hat trick,” said Vermont.
Danvers scored its first goal of the game two minutes before halftime, which cut Lynnfield’s lead to 4-1 at the break.
The Falcons found the back of the net seven minutes into the second half.
Danvers scored its third goal of the game 13 minutes into the second half.
The Falcons tied the game 4-4 with 13 minutes remaining in the game.
Vermont said the Danvers’ game was a teachable moment for the Pioneers.
“We had several opportunities to score and we just didn’t finish some of those opportunities,” said Vermont. “I could have done a better job making adjustments in the second half, so that is on me. It was a great game. I was really proud of how hard the girls worked. We were disappointed because we were up, but we have to give Danvers credit for coming back. Danvers is a great team.”
Vermont decided to start senior defender Morgan Hubbard in net due to Minor still being out with an injury. Hubbard tallied seven saves in net.
“I thought Morgan did a great job for us,” said Vermont. “I decided to start Morgan because she is a senior who has played in big games in the past. She did a nice job.”
Upcoming games
The Pioneers traveled to North Reading on Tuesday, Oct. 15, taking place after deadline. Lynnfield hosts Rockport on Senior Night on Saturday, Oct. 19, beginning at 5 p.m.
