Warrior girl skaters come up short against Wilmington, tie Stoneham

WILMINGTON — The Wakefield Memorial High girls’ hockey team can’t seem to catch a break to earn its first win of the year as it came up short in its two games last week against Wilmington and Stoneham.
The Warriors were blanked by the Wildcats by a 2-0 tally on Saturday afternoon at the Ristuccia Memorial Arena. The setback came after Wakefield played Stoneham to a 2-2 tie on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at the Kasabuski Arena.
Wakefield played Melrose last night at the Flynn Rink. The score and details of that game were unavailable at press time.
Wakefield’s record is 0-12-3 overall record and 0-10-3 in the Middlesex League Freedom division.
Wilmington Game
The Warriors played the Wildcats pretty evenly on Saturday afternoon at the Ristuccia Memorial Arena. But Wilmington proved to the more opportunistic team.
Wilmington’s Olivia Wingate got the Wildcats on the board at 11:16 of the first period with a power play goal. Lauren D’Angelo and Avery Anderson earned the assists.
The Wildcats made it 2-0 at 1:14 of the second period. Jackie Ryan lit the lamp with Lauren DePasquale and D’Angelo earning the assists.
Wakefield had its chances to score and outshot Wilmington, 33-29. But despite several good scoring chances in the back and forth, the Warriors were unable to put one in the back of the net.
Senior goalie Miriam Wood played in net for Wakefield and made 27 saves. One of those saves was on a 2-on-0 breakaway.
Stoneham Game
The Warriors and Spartans faced each other for the second time this season on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at the Kasabuski Arena. For the second time, the two Middlesex League Freedom division rivals played to each other to a draw.
Wakefield scored the first goal at 2:38 of the first period on power play as junior forward Julianna Bourque found the back of the net. Assisting on the play were freshman defenseman Courtney Hill and eighth grade forward Brooke Lilley.
But Stoneham came and scored the equalizer 18 seconds later at 2:56. Alexandra Frost, a eighth grade forward, scored with junior forward Dominque DelVecchio earning the assist.
The Warriors came back and took a 2-1 lead at 1:44 of the second period. Senior forward and captain Meghan Guarino scored the goal with Bourque and junior forward Meaghan Kerrigan getting the assists.
The Spartans tied the game at 2-2 at 9:23. Alexis Saia, an eighth grade forward, found the back of the net and assisting on the goal were DelVecchio and freshman defenseman Michaela Guerin.
Wakefield outshot Stoneham, 36-21. Lydia Rascher, an eighth grader, played in goal for Wakefield and turned back 19 shots.
