LYNNFIELD — Lynnfield High girls’ basketball coach Sue Breen handed out four awards at the team’s end-of-season banquet on March 5.

The team MVP Award went to junior forward/guard Erika Pasquale. Junior forward Taylor Valiton took home the Coaches Award while her freshman sister, Hayden, received the Rookie of the Year Award.

Junior guard Emma Rose was the recipient of the Lynnfield Athletic Association’s Scholar-Athlete Award, which is awarded to the player with the highest GPA. The Pioneers’ Spirit Award was given to senior captain Ava Gamache, who played guard.

Lynnfield finished the season at 7-12 overall. In the Cape Ann League, they went 5-10 as they were one of the youngest teams in the league.

“We had a difficult schedule and several of the teams we played went deep into the tournament,” pointed out Breen, who just completed her third year at the helm. “We also had to deal with some badly-timed injuries.”

The Pioneers will lose two seniors to graduation: Gamache and forward Addie Connelly.

“Ava was so important to the team for three years here,” said Breen. “She is a smart, intense competitor and a good leader,”

Connelly played just this season.

“I would have loved to have her come out for the team a couple of years ago,” said Breen. “She is a good athlete and is very mature.”

Next season, the Pioneers are slated to return nine veterans including the Valiton sisters who both made the CAL All-Star team this winter.

Hayden, a forward, made the CAL First-Team All-Stars while Taylor made the CAL Second-Team All-Stars.

Hayden led the team in scoring averaging 9.7 points per game. She was also second on the team in rebounding averaging 7.3 boards per contest.

Taylor led the Pioneers in rebounds averaging 11.8 per game. The co-captain was second behind Hayden in scoring averaging 7.3 points per game.

The players also voted on the captains for next year and, along with Taylor Valiton, Pasquale and Rose will be the tri-captains.

“I am hoping the girls work hard during the off-season and, if we can improve on our scoring, should do better next year,” said Breen.
