PHOTO: The eagle has landed

THIS North American bald eagle was the subject of much attention perched some 70 feet high on the outer branch of a tree on Preston Street Tuesday morning. Its spectacular large brown body, white head and tail and orange beak created a stark image against the cloudy-white sky, where it remained for hours, despite being harassed by a pair of persistent hawks.

Firefighters on the roof of Lakeside Inn

A FIRE TODAY at about 10 a.m. at the Lakeside Inn on North Avenue drew firefighters and apparatus from Wakefield and surrounding towns including Melrose, Stoneham, Reading and North Reading. The fire appears to have been sparked by plumbing work at the hotel, according to Fire Chief Michael Sullivan, who was at the scene. Preliminary indications were that the fire spread within the walls up to the second floor of the building. One worker at the hotel was transported to the hospital with burns but the severity of the injury was not known. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control fairly quickly, Sullivan said.
