US Army Reserve veteran

MELROSE — David G. Moran, longtime Melrose resident, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, May 27 at age 82.

Dave was born in Boston on December 31, 1941, one of three children of the late David G. Moran and Mary T. (Keegan) Moran. A Dorchester native and graduate of Cathedral High School, Dave’s roots forever remained part of his identity and he proudly recalled his upbringing throughout life. After serving the US Army Reserves, Dave married Judith M. Trodden at St. Joseph’s Church in Malden on June 8, 1963 and they settled in Melrose in 1972 to raise a family of four children. Dave found employment that suited him within operations at Avco/Textron based in Wilmington. He “retired” in 1995, finding a later career in IT support for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts until fully retiring in 2016.

Growing up spending summers in Scituate, Dave always enjoyed visiting the South Shore, especially Cape Cod with family. A lover of all things food, Dave was always on the lookout for his next meal and never said no to a restaurant meal, generally selecting the establishment based on portion size. A sports enthusiast, he played basketball and ran track in his youth and played golf later in life. For many years, he took family and friends to hockey games as a Boston University season ticket holder.

Dave’s strong connection to his Irish heritage was known through his “hit parade Saturdays” of endless hours of loud Irish music playing for all in the neighborhood to hear. Always on the go, Dave was a devout Catholic, parishioner of St. Mary’s Church and longtime active member of the Melrose Knights of Columbus, Council #128.

Dave was always up for a social event and sharing his quick, sometimes sharp wit with all. He enjoyed a sarcastic good laugh and always persevered and carried on no matter the latest health challenge. Not one for change, he fully embraced life and was happy to celebrate his family. He will be missed, but always lovingly remembered.

Dave was the beloved husband of the late Judith M. (Trodden) Moran with whom he shared nearly 60 years of marriage. Devoted father of Brian Moran and his wife Donna Monroe of Taunton; Nancy Hume and her husband Donald of Wakefield; Stephen Moran and his wife Julie of Braintree; and Michael Moran and his wife Nancy of Melrose. Dear brother of James Moran and his wife Karen of Naples, FL and the late Mary Moran. Cherished grandfather of Brandon, Devon, Errica, Luke, Caroline, Elizabeth, Sean and Meghan. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to gather in honor of Dave during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Friday, May 31 from 4 to 8 p.m. and again on Saturday, June 1 at 9 a.m. before leaving in procession to St. Mary’s Church, Herbert St., Melrose for his funeral Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. Gifts in Dave’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Church, 46 Myrtle St., Melrose, MA 02176. For online tribute, visit RobinsonFuneralHome.com.
