Warriors finish fifth overall in varsity race
WRENTHAM — If the Wakefield Memorial High girls’ cross country team wanted to see how it stacked up against teams from outside the Middlesex League in state competition, then it sure found out on Saturday afternoon at the Frank Kelley Invitational Meet held at the Wrentham Developmental Center.
The Warriors secured fifth place overall in the team scoring with 155 points in the Division 2 Varsity Girls’ Race. Ursuline Academy (56 points), Tewksbury (65 points), Pembroke (92 points) and Westwood (143) finished ahead of Wakefield which had a good showing itself.
Senior co-captain Emily Hammond finished among the top 25 and medaled as she captured 15th place in a time of 21:55.97 over the 5K course.
Also medaling for the Warriors was Sara Custodio, a junior. Custodio clocked in at 22:13.4 which was good for 19th place.
Wakefield had four more entries in the varsity race.
Sophomore Abigail Harrington finished in 56th place in a time of 24:16.62, while senior co-captain Lauren Sallade came in 65th place at 24:28.72.
Reilly McNamara, a sophomore, timed in at 25:47.24 for 102nd place and Maeve Conway, a sophomore, finished in 111th place with a time of 26:32.37.
Wakefield also had entries in both the Div. 2 JV Girls’ Race and the Div. 2 Freshman Girls’ Race.
In the JV race, Catherine Urbano, a junior, took 14th place in the 5K run as she clocked in at 25:49.47.
Also running in the JV race for the Warriors were senior Joanna Hammond (27th place, 27:03.93), sophomore Emily Heil (37th place, 27:42.62) and junior Sam Ross (68th place, 29:42.72).
In the freshman race, Gillian Russell secured a 24th place finish with a time of 14:13.67.
Wakefield will run against Stoneham this afternoon at 3:45 p.m. at the MDC Sheepfold Course in Stoneham.
