MELROSE — Please come and join a group of Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School students who have scheduled a local fundraiser to raise money for this year’s trip to Washington, D.C., honoring local veterans.

Funds raised will allow a number of veterans, together with a companion, to make this bus trip to our nation’s capitol at no cost to them. It is scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 10, 11 and 12. “Operation United,” which is what this year’s trip has been named, has become a truly memorable event showing how much our veterans mean to us. The focus this year is on all past military engagements and was chosen to show unity amongst all groups instead of concentrating on all the divisiveness in today’s world. Past trips have honored specific groups but the plan this year is to honor those veterans who for one reason or another, could not make trips in the past few years. Any veteran who is interested in going should contact the Melrose Veterans Office at City Hall at 781-979-4186, for more information.

Highlights of the trip include the Washington Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, World War II Memorial, Iwo Jima, Korean War, Vietnam War Wall, Arlington Cemetery, and many, many more. Those attending some of the other trips were most impressed with, not only the trip and the sightseeing benefits but, the student participation in what is a completely voluntary project under the guidance of a respected and dedicated teacher, Miss Lisa Lord.

On Wednesday evening, March 7, a dinner fundraiser will be held at the Liberty Bell Restaurant from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Liberty Bell is located at 866 Main Street in the Whole Foods Plaza. Students involved in this worthwhile endeavor will be on hand to welcome you. This event is a win-win situation for everyone because you can treat yourself to dinner out, or order it to go, and also help a wonderful cause. Your eat-in and/or take-out orders all benefit the group.

Liberty Bell has hosted these fundraisers for quite some time and we admire and thank them for their many considerations.

Their telephone number, to order take-out, is 781-662-6900. Get in the spirit and support a very worthwhile cause, and give the family cook the night off! They’ll appreciate it and so will we.
