MELROSE—In an email to its members, the Melrose Little League gave players and their families updates about how they hope to salvage their season. The communication was dated April 26 and written by President Jay Recinito.

“I hope that this note finds you and your family healthy and well. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wanted to provide our MLL families with an update on our thoughts for the 2020 season.

On-field activities obviously will remain suspended at this time but we are still cautiously optimistic that we will be able to offer baseball for our families this year. The best weather months are still ahead of us and we are willing to extend the playing window into the summer and fall to give our players an opportunity to get on the field if it becomes possible. The health and safety of our players and families is the highest priority and we will only resume playing when it is determined safe to do so. While we will be listening to the recommendations from Little League of America, our league will be focused on the guidance from the State and City officials to decide when it is safe to return to the diamond.

While a decision point is still several weeks away and if it becomes obvious that a 2020 season is not possible, the Board has some initial thoughts on moving forward. Eligible 2020 registered players will be automatically enrolled for the 2021 season and graduating players would be reimbursed. This is only a preliminary plan and would need to be formalized by the board if needed (hopefully we play and never get to this decision). Any family that wishes to discuss their 2020 registration is welcome to reply to me or reach out to our Player Agent John Orlandella mll.player.agent@melroselittleleague.org.

In the meantime, while we wait and hope for sunny baseball days, we hope you are enjoying some of the memories that have been shared on the league’s Facebook and Instagram pages. We want to keep that going if you have any memories that you want to share or photos/ videos of your Little Leaguer keeping their baseball skills sharp please send them along. mll.president@melroselittleleague.org. We will keep updating you as best we can as we all navigate through these uncertain times together.”
