NORTH READING Although no North Reading High boys’ tennis player made the Cape Ann League All-Star team this spring, several players did have successful seasons.
“We only have nine slots available for the All-Star team so it is tough to make, especially in our league where four of our teams made the final eight in Division 4,” explained Hornets head coach Mark Bisognano.
Junior, Roman Ton, went 9-7 at first singles while sophomore, Parker Lee, was 1-1 at first singles and 9-6 at second singles.
“Roman had an exceptional year considering that he had a winning record at first singles,” said Bisognano. “Parker played above my expectations this year.”
Sameer Murthy was 5-9 at third singles and was 0-2 in doubles.
“Sameer was a pleasant surprise,” said Bisognano, about the 10th-grader. “He was a transfer from Melrose so I didn’t know anything about him coming into the season.”
Jonathan Park and Aiden Patell played the most at first doubles and they went 5-6. Raffi Toby and Alex DeWolfe played the most matches at second doubles and went 4-4.
“Raffi was our X factor,’ said Bisognano, about the sophomore. “He played well at doubles all year with different partners.Jonathan was solid at first doubles all year.”
Toby was 3-0 when teamed with Patel and 2-0 with Rickey Ho.
The Hornets were edged, 3-2, at Cape Cod Academy in the first round of the Division 3 state tournament on June 1 to end the year at 10-9.
Cape Cod Academy beat Old Rochetser in the Round of 16 then fell to Weston in the Round of 8 to end the year at 14-3.
In the Cape Ann League, the Hornets went 5-6 as they came in third place in the CAL Kinney Division.
