WAKEFIELD — Starting today, National Grid has added a third work crew on Broadway between Lake Street and Nelly Street.

Crews will begin excavation and installation of the duct bank while proceeding toward the direction of Nelly Street. Construction hours remain the same at this work site, but an additional day of work has been scheduled weekly: Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Saturday construction on Broadway between Lake Street and Nelly Street will begin Aug. 7 and work will continue to take place each Saturday for the foreseeable future in order to expedite construction and complete this section of the project as safely and efficiently as possible.

The street will remain accessible to residents of Broadway and neighboring streets as well as emergency-vehicle traffic with the assistance of police details located around the work site.

Excavation and duct bank installation continues along the section of Broadway, between Albion Street and Nelly Street. The construction schedule at this work site remains unchanged (Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.). The traffic management plan calls for Broadway to be closed between Nelly Street and Albion Street. Emergency and residential vehicles will have access with assistance from the police in the area.

This week, crews will also be mobilizing on Broadway between Foundry Street and the MBTA Crossing preparing for upcoming work.

As construction continues, the Wakefield Police Department has the option to modify the traffic management plans based on their judgment and expertise, including street closures and traffic detours to ensure the safety of the general public. Police details will be present at all work sites to facilitate vehicle and pedestrian traffic management. Caution is recommended when approaching these active work areas to minimize risks to personal safety, and to avoid any interference with construction.

In light of COVID-19, National Grid has enacted additional policies and guidelines for field and office personnel that are in line with the Commonwealth’s Guidelines and Procedures for construction as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines. Under the direction of National Grid, the Woburn-to-Wakefield Line Project is a new underground electric transmission line being built in Wakefield, Stoneham, Winchester, and Woburn. The line addresses potential overloads on existing transmission lines first identified in ISO-NE’s 2008 Needs Assessment, reevaluated in 2013/2014, and confirmed in ISO-NE’s 2015 Needs Assessment.

Once all project construction is complete, the project route will be repaved, curb-to-curb, at National Grid’s expense. This includes sections of Albion Street, Broadway, North Avenue, Main Street, Salem Street, and Montrose Avenue as well as street crossings at Bennett Street, Richardson Street, and Water Street.
