NORTH READING — Hosting the annual Cape Ann League Championship Meet on Friday, the NRHS girls’ track team had set big goals and they did not disappoint as they successfully defended their championship run that goes back to 2014.

The Hornets won 10 of the 18 events contested which in itself would have earned them 100 points, which would have been enough to win the league championship. However, they did not stop there as they compiled a total of 197 points throughout the meet, besting runner-up Newburyport (93 points) by over a whopping 100 points.

Giuliana Ligor was named the Cape Ann League Athlete of the Year and was the only triple winner of the evening, earning the gold medal in the 100 Meters (12.24), 400 Meters (59.16), and 400 Meter Hurdles (1:02.07). Her time in the 400 Meter Hurdles also set a new meet record.

Abigail Lilley was a double winner in the Shot Put (35’ 1.5”) and the Discus Throw (124’ 9”) and took second in the High Jump (4’ 10”). Abby’s performance in the Discus Throw earned her a 4th straight CAL Championship in the event while also setting a new school record and meet record.

Hayden MacLellan also won two events in the 100 Meter Hurdles (15.34) and Pole Vault (10’ 6”) while also taking second in the Long Jump (16’ 11”).

Madison Vant won the Long Jump (17’ 3”) and took second in the Triple Jump (35’ .5”).  Madison also anchored the winning 4 x 100 Meter Relay to a winning time of 51.33 along with Julia Scammon, Julia DeAngelis, and Georgia Robarts.

Callie MacLellan won the High Jump (5’ 0”) and took 6th in the Pole Vault (7’ 0”) and also led off the 4×400 Meter Relay which placed 5th in a time of 4:23.71 along with Ariana Demetri, Sophia Gallivan, and Shea Farmer.

Additional point scorers included the following: Sabrina Mini (Discus Throw, Javelin Throw, and Shot Put), Georgia Robarts (Triple Jump and Long Jump), Julia Scammon (100 Meters), Alana Hannon (Pole Vault), Kate Denehy (Long Jump and Triple Jump), Adelyn Kelly (2 Mile), Giuliana Auciello (High Jump), Quinlan Kelly (800 Meters and 4 x 800 Meter Relay), Ava Collins (4 x 800 Meter Relay), Jacquelyn Genzler (Javelin Throw and Shot Put), Sydney Scholz (Javelin Throw), Abigail Meier (4 x 800 Meter Relay), Miriana Bornstein (Discus Throw) and Eva Hanegraaff (4 x 800 Meter Relay).

The Hornets have set their focus on repeating as the MIAA Division 5 State Champion this upcoming weekend, having already successfully defended their CAL Championship and MSTCA Relay Championship, as they seek to cap off a Triple Crown for the season. The event will take place over two days on Friday, May 24 and Sunday, May 26 at Bridgewater State University.
