NORTH READING — Flint Memorial Library’s Artists of the Month are Linda Balek and her son Greg Balek.

As a New Englander, Linda has always been inspired by the abundance of nature, which is evident throughout her work. Originally from Maine, she now lives in Boxford, Mass. Linda’s background as a structural engineer has also aided her in her artwork. She said that engineers need to “be highly creative and think outside the box,” as their role is to be problem-solvers. Her son, Greg, is a software engineer who shares her creative mindset. He’s a multi-faceted artist who paints as a creative outlet.

The Baleks’ work varies in subject and mediums. Currently on display at the library, one will find works done with graphite pencil, oil paints, and gouache paints. The display includes scenes of lush landscapes as well as portraits of animals.

All of Linda’s pieces are based on original reference photographs as her sole source material. In her landscapes, she uses a combination of brushes and palette knives. In her portraiture, the viewer can appreciate her brushwork that allows her to achieve a great level of detail.

Linda shared that Greg tends to take more creative liberties with his art. His experimental use of color can be seen in his works on display. As with any artists, Greg’s and Linda’s work differs vastly. They will sometimes use the same reference image as the subject, yet produce entirely different pieces as a result. The two meet on Zoom every week to paint together virtually.

Linda does commission work for custom portraits of pets and homes. She also teaches private art classes. For more information visit lindabalek.com.

The art show may be viewed on the first floor of the library, 147 Park St., through the end of the month during the library’s regular  hours: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays,10 a.m.–8 p.m.;   Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; closed Sundays. The library will also be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday and Friday, November 28 and 29.
