WAKEFIELD — Residents and customers have reacted with concern to the news that one of the downtown’s oldest businesses has been closed recently.

Stylecraft Supply, Inc., a fixture in Wakefield since 1952, currently has a bright orange sign in the front window of its 478 Main St. location that tells at least part of the story.

“The business property of Stylecraft Supply, Inc. has been seized for nonpayment of taxes and is now in possession of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts,” the sign reads. “Any person who attempts to tamper or interfere with this property will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” The sign was posted by the Massachusetts Department of Revenue.

A search of the Massachusetts DOR online Public Disclosure Tax Delinquent List reveals that $68,227 is owed to the state by Stylecraft Supply, Inc. in back taxes.

“Business and individuals who owe more than $25,000 in taxes to Massachusetts are posted on an online, public list,” the DOR site states. “Before a taxpayer appears on this list, they have already been notified via letter from the Department of Revenue, as required by law. All taxpayers on this list can either pay the whole liability or resolve the liability in a way that satisfies our conditions.”

The owners of the property are listed in town records as “C & C Realty Trust, Edward Cameron, et al,” of Reading. The town has the value of the property assessed at $306,300.

According to its web site, Stylecraft Supply has been an independent
Benjamin Moore paint retailer offering the following products, including premium Benjamin Moore coatings: Benjamin Moore Paints such as Natura, Aura, and Regal; wallpaper; window shades; and radiator covers. Their product line has been complemented by services such as color matching, stain matching and color consultations.

It is unknown if the store will reopen for business.

In the meantime, Doug Hart of Hart’s Hardware said that he has brought in the Benjamin Moore line of paints and would be happy to assist any Stylecraft customers.
