WAKEFIELD’S LOWER COMMON about 1890. The view in this colorized photo is from Lake Avenue, looking across toward Main and Salem streets. The white building in the background just right of center is the old Town House. It was originally built in 1834 and stood on Church Street. Sometime after 1873, it was moved to the south corner of Main and Salem streets, as shown in this photo. In the center of the photo, some sort of net appears to have been set up, possibly for lawn tennis, which was gaining popularity at the time.
