IN 1868, THE YEAR that South Reading became Wakefield, C.H.R. CHENEY owned the first jewelry store and first newspaper and periodical store in Wakefield, located at the corner of Main and Centre streets. Note the sign above the door advertising The Boston Herald. The store on the right is advertising sewing machines. Photography was quite a production in 1868, and figures can be seen in the upper windows observing the proceedings. Photo is from the collection of Charles S. Knowles.
