SOUTH HADLEY — Wakefield’s Patrick Maloney competed at the Mass Golf Amatuer Public Links Championship yesterday at Ledges Golf Club in South Hadley.

He shot a 79 in the first round which is 7-over par at Ledges. Maloney was one of the youngest competitors in the tournament. He finished just one stroke below the cut line. His best moment was on the 12th hole, a par-3, which he birdied.

Maloney, who is getting ready for his sophomore golf season at WMHS, qualified for the championship by shooting a 75 at the qualifier held at Sagamore Spring Golf Club on June 25. His terrific round included three birdies in a row on 10, 11 and 12. Only 12 players at that event made the cut to advance. Maloney’s 5-over par was tied for 7th overall. He was the only high school student to make the cut.
