Served in U.S. Air Force during Korean War

MELROSE — William “Bill” Crowther, 84, of Melrose, died July 15, 2017.

Bill was born in Stoneham on July 22, 1932 to Andrew and Mary (Daly) Crowther. He was raised in Stoneham and graduated from Stoneham High School in 1949. Bill served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Following the war, he married his wife, Joan, and the two moved to Melrose in 1958 where they remained for the rest of their lives. Bill worked for the Mass. Turnpike Authority for 30 years, serving as the assistant superintendent for the Sumner and Callahan Tunnels.

He was the husband of the late Joan C. (Smith) Crowther. He was the father of Carole Crowther of Melrose, Kathleen Calabro and her husband David of Andover, John Crowther and his wife Deana of Sandwich, and Edward Crowther and his wife Catherine of Bedford, N.H. He was the grandfather of Kevin, Michelle, Gregory, Michael, William, Katherine, Abigail, Thomas and Claire. He was predeceased by his brother, Andrew Crowther, and his sister, Mary Clausmeyer.

Visiting hours were held on Tuesday, July 18. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mary’s Church, 9 Herbert St., on Wednesday, July 19. Interment will be private. To leave an online message of condolence, visit gatelyfh.com.
