REVERE — William J. Kane, 73, a resident of Revere, passed away unexpectedly at home on Sunday, May 14.
Bill was born in Charlestown on May 9, 1944, one of eight children of the late Joseph Kane and Theresa (Harrigan) Kane. Raised in Charlestown, he attended Charlestown schools and had a spirited and eventful youth.
He was married on September 28, 1984 to Linda Lockhart, and settled down with the addition of four daughters in Revere. A food lover and cook by trade, Bill worked in food service for many years in the Boston area.
Bill was an avid Boston sports fan, and loved the thrill of competition at the race track. Bill, along with his two brothers, enjoyed the rush of excitement while at Foxwoods or wagering on horses at Suffolk Downs. He was also an avid Boston sports fan who attended many opening day games with his brother, and always supported his Boston teams.
Being from Charlestown, Bill remained proud of his roots and Irish heritage throughout his life. He presented a tough exterior, but his family knew a hidden softer side. He always gave thoughtful consideration and heartfelt gifts to his family, and especially to Linda who, in his own way, he liked to spoil.
Beloved by his grandchildren, Bill enjoyed the holidays, and made everyone laugh with his exploits, stories from his childhood, or dry sense of humor.
When he was younger, he enjoyed taking the girls fishing on Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield, or taking deep sea fishing trips with his brother. A very good cook, Bill was passionate about food, made great pasta sauce, corn beef and cabbage, and loved his meatballs. He will be lovingly remembered by his family.
Bill was the beloved husband of Linda (Lockhart) Kane with whom he shared 33 years of marriage. He was the devoted father of Joyce A. Elliot of Windham, ME, Christine A. Turner and her husband Tony of TN, Andrea B. Gendron of Athol, and Karen F. Perkins-Dow and her husband Brendan of Orange. He was the dear brother of Theresa Daly and her husband Bill of Everett, Marjorie McDonald of Everett, Joseph Kane and his wife Pat of Charlestown, and the late Edward Kane, Bertha “Betty’ Searcy, Mary Bowman, and Robert Kane and his surviving wife Margaret. He was the caring brother-in-law of June Hamilton and her husband Herbert of Shrewsbury, and Joyce Greb and her late husband Stanley of Malden. He was the cherished grandfather of Adrianna Avery-Picozzi and her husband Nicholas, Timothy Avery, Allyson Avery, Angelica Machado-Millspaugh, Kevin Gendron, Lynnell Gendron, Austin Leary, Mason Dow, Madison Leary, and Raedyn Bennett. He was the loving great-grandfather of Sophia Muzzy and Vincent Caron.
Relatives and friends gathered in honor and remembrance of Bill’s life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Wednesday, May 17, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m, and again for his funeral service celebrated on Thursday at a time to be announced.
